Chapter 358: Open the Door
Chapter 358: Open the Door
Ignis’s golden eyes caught the faint outline of a massive door ahead, carved with the familiar serpent-eating-its-tail symbol. The Ouroboros. Her wings beat hard, carrying them toward it with desperate speed."There! I see the door!"
Azrynn’s voice was sharp with alarm. "Wait! If we go through that door, we’ll be trapped inside the seal! We might as well just be locking ourselves in this void."
Ignis’s flames flickered with frustration. "She’s right! What do we do?!"
Lilith’s voice cut through, calm but firm. "Calm down. The compass is guiding us toward the exit. That means we can leave through that door—but we need to figure out how."
Alice’s voice was strained, her barrier holding back the void creature’s relentless advance. "Then figure it out fast! I can’t hold this forever!"
Lilith’s crimson eyes scanned the pouch at Adam’s waist—the Pouch of the Hoarding Gnome, still attached to the unconscious form within the shadow sphere. She reached in, her fingers brushing against familiar objects, until they closed around the weathered leather-bound book they had found in the dead body.
She pulled it free and flipped through the pages with practiced speed, her eyes scanning the faded script.
Isolde’s voice came from behind, weak but sharp. "Look for something related to Ouroboros. The door opened with that symbol before—it has to be connected."
Lilith’s fingers stopped on a page near the middle of the book. Her eyes narrowed as she read.
"Here. A passage about the seal’s inner mechanism. It says the door can only be opened from the inside by those who bear the mark of Ouroboros—either by blood or by contract. The seal was designed to keep the Void in, but it also allows those who carry the Ouroboros’s essence to leave freely."
Alice’s voice was tight, her barrier beginning to crack under the pressure. "And who carries that essence?! We don’t have any Ouroboros blood—"
Ignis’s draconic voice rumbled, sudden and bright. "Adam does! He is an Ouroboros!"
Lilith’s crimson eyes gleamed. "Then we need Adam to open the door."
Isolde’s voice was flat. "Adam is unconscious."
Lilith’s lips curved into a thin, sharp smile. "Then we wake him up."
Alice glanced back, her dark violet eyes narrowing. "He’s not going to wake up easily. I used a sleep technique on him to keep him from pushing himself further."
Lilith’s voice was calm, but carried an edge of finality. "Then we find another way. Or we wake him up anyway and hope he can handle it."
Ignis’s voice cut through, sharp with urgency. "Alice! The barrier is cracking!"
Alice’s ears flattened. Her tail lashed. The dark violet barrier was spiderwebbing under the void creature’s assault, and the creature’s massive form was visible through the cracks—its maw of jagged shadow opening wide, ready to swallow them whole.
"Wake him up! Now!" Alice shouted.
Lilith reached into the shadow sphere where Adam lay unconscious. Her threads coiled around his shoulders, her voice dropping into a low, commanding murmur.
"Adam. Wake up."
Adam didn’t stir. His breathing remained slow and steady, his body limp within the shadow sphere. The void creature’s roar echoed behind them, and Alice’s barrier cracked further under the pressure.
Lilith’s jaw tightened. "This is pointless. He’s completely unconscious." Her crimson eyes snapped toward Alice. "What exactly did you do to him?!"
Alice’s cheeks flushed slightly, her cat ears flattening with embarrassment. "That’s not important right now!"
Ignis’s draconic voice rumbled with panic. "The barrier is breaking! We don’t have much time!"
Isolde’s voice cut through, sharp and desperate. "Then we try something else! Maybe we just need his blood! The door opened with the Ouroboros symbol before—perhaps the seal only requires a trace of his essence!"
Lilith didn’t hesitate. She reached into the shadow sphere, her fingers finding Adam’s hand. Her claws extended, and she made a small, precise cut on his fingertip. A bead of dark blood welled up, glistening in the dim light. She pressed her fingers against it, then reached forward and smeared the blood across the Ouroboros symbol on the door.
Nothing happened.
The door remained sealed.
Alice’s voice came out flat, strained. "It didn’t work."
Lilith’s crimson eyes narrowed. "Tch. Then what—"
Ignis’s wings faltered as a tremor shook the ground beneath them. Her golden eyes darted back. "The creature is breaking through! We’re out of time!"
Azrynn’s voice cracked with panic. "What do we do?! We can’t fight that thing here!"
Lilith’s threads tightened around Adam’s unconscious form. "We need another way. Alice—"
Alice’s ears flattened. Her tail lashed. Her dark violet eyes were fixed on the door, her mind racing.
Then she blinked.
"...Switch with me."
She stepped forward, pressing her palm against the Ouroboros symbol on the door. Her eyes closed, and her aura flared—dark violet energy pulsing along her skin, sinking into the carved serpent.
The symbol flared in response and a low hum vibrated through the stone.
Alice’s voice came out quiet, focused. "The Bloom’s essence—it’s tied to the seal. The Void Manifest said I was the key. The Bloom was meant to break the seal... but I can use it to weaken it instead. Just long enough for Adam’s blood to work."
The symbol pulsed, and the door groaned.
Cracks spread across the door’s surface. The symbol began to turn, the serpent’s tail sliding through its own mouth, rotating in a slow, deliberate motion.
Alice’s voice came out strained, her palm still pressed against the door. "It’s working... but it’s not enough. I can’t hold it for long!"
Lilith’s crimson eyes sharpened. "Then we don’t need long."
She reached into the shadow sphere, her fingers brushing against Adam’s unconscious form. Her threads coiled around his hand, guiding it forward, pressing his palm against the door beside Alice’s.
The moment Adam’s bloodied fingers touched the surface, the symbol blazed. Golden light erupted from the door, pushing back the encroaching darkness. The serpent’s eyes flared, and the door began to open—slowly at first, then faster, grinding against ancient stone as it slid aside.
Ignis’s voice burst out, bright with relief. "It’s open! Alice, you did it!"
Alice stumbled back, her chest heaving, her cat ears flat against her skull. "Don’t... don’t celebrate yet. The seal is unstable. We need to move. NOW."
The void creature’s roar shook the crumbling library, its massive form surging forward with desperate, frenzied speed. Its jagged maw gaped wide, shadows coiling and writhing around its body like living chains.
"NO! YOU WILL NOT ESCAPE! I WILL NOT BE LEFT BEHIND!"
The group didn’t hesitate. Ignis’s wings beat hard, propelling them through the open doorway as the creature lunged, its claws scraping against the stone floor just inches behind them.
Azrynn’s voice cracked with panic. "It’s right behind us!"
Lilith’s threads snapped out, lashing across the creature’s face, momentarily blinding it. "Keep moving! Don’t look back!"
Alice was the last through the doorway, her dark violet eyes fixed on the creature as it surged forward, its massive form filling the gap in the wall where the Ouroboros door had been.
"After all these centuries... I will be free!"
She dove through the threshold just as the creature’s claws slammed into the frame. The impact shook the library, and the heavy stone door groaned, its ancient hinges straining.
The Ouroboros symbol on the door’s surface blazed with golden light. The serpent’s eyes flared, and the door began to slide shut—slowly at first, then faster, grinding against the stone as if driven by an ancient will.
The creature’s roar echoed through the chamber, raw with fury and desperation.
"NO! THE SEAL—! I WILL NOT BE CONTAINED AGAIN!"
It lunged forward, its claws scraping against the narrowing gap, trying to force its way through. But the door held. It was too strong, too ancient, its purpose absolute.
The symbol blazed one final time, and the door slammed shut with a deafening BOOM that echoed through the library.
The creature’s roar faded into a distant, muffled howl, growing fainter as the seal reasserted itself.
Ignis’s wings faltered, her massive form landing heavily on the stone floor of the library. She shuddered, scales rippling as she shrank back into her humanoid form, collapsing onto her hands and knees, gasping.
"We... we made it..."
Alice’s cat ears twitched, her tail swaying slowly. She let out a long, slow breath. "Yeah. We made it."
Lilith’s voice was dry, but carried a hint of approval. "Not bad for a group that was running blind half the time."
Isolde slumped against a broken bookshelf, her face pale, her breath shallow. "That was... too close."
Azrynn sank to the ground, her hands trembling, her bow clattering beside her. "I never want to do that again."
The library stretched around them, its shelves shattered and empty, the same ruined chamber they had entered what felt like an eternity ago. The pale silver light filtering through the cracks in the ceiling felt like a promise of the surface world.
Ignis pushed herself up, a slow grin spreading across her face. "So... we’re free?"
Lilith’s lips curved into a thin, satisfied smile. "It would seem so."
Alice’s ears twitched, and her tail swayed behind her. She looked at the door, at the faded symbol of the Ouroboros, and a small, genuine smile crossed her face.
"Then let’s get out of here."
