Chapter 571 571: Celebration Party
Chapter 571 571: Celebration Party
The bronze eagle-shaped door knocker rang out with a pleasant sound:
"I am silent, yet I make emperors kneel;
I am invisible and without form, yet sharper than any sword;
I am heavier than gold, yet lighter than a feather;
The wise crave me, the foolish waste me.
— What am I?"
It was a very simple riddle. Without hesitation, Wade said, "Time."
"Correct answer."
The door knocker whispered, and then the wooden panel swung open. Warm firelight and candlelight spilled out, and the noise of lively chatter came rushing toward him.
"Wade's back!"
Someone shouted, and the person standing at the door quickly pulled him inside, then raised Wade's arm high and shouted, "Our champion!"
"Ohhhhhh—!"
The entire common room screamed in excitement. Wade had never realized there were so many Ravenclaw students.
The wooden panel at the entrance stayed open for a few more seconds before slowly closing again. On the carpet, dampened by butterbeer, a faint trail of footprints appeared.
The footprints made their way with some effort around the crowd toward a relatively quiet corner by the bookshelves. Two girls who had been eating cake there suddenly seemed to catch the fever of the celebration, abandoned their cake, and rushed toward the crowd.
Lower-year students crowded right in front of Wade, waving homemade flags painted with ravens and golden flames. Some of the older students stood a little farther back, smiling in approval and clapping.
The fourth-years were the most excited—Terry had popped open bottle after bottle of butterbeer, pressing one into everyone's hands.
Anthony pushed his way to the front, threw an arm around Wade's neck, and shouted, "I knew it! I knew it had to be you!"
"Oh, come on, we all knew!" Ravenclaw Prefect shouted with a big grin, raising his bottle. "Let's all congratulate Wade for being chosen as our Champion!"
"Cheers!"
Everyone raised their glasses together. Even the little wizards who couldn't drink alcohol stretched out their arms as far as they could, holding up cups of juice.
Michael frowned slightly and was just about to swap out the butterbeer in Wade's hand when he saw Wade, looking perfectly at ease, raise his bottle and call out loudly, "Cheers!"
Then he tilted back his head and downed it in one go!
"Ohhhhhh—!"
The common room erupted in another wave of cheers. The crowd pressed in around Wade, quickly shoving a fresh bottle of butterbeer into his hand. Someone was already eager to get his autograph.
"Wade, will the Spells Study Group still continue?" someone asked with concern.
"Of course." Wade took a big gulp of butterbeer and said with a smile, "As long as you want to come, the Spells Study Group will always be here!"
"What's the first task going to be? What can we do to help you?" Lisa shouted, as if she couldn't wait to be the Champion's assistant.
"The event details are a secret… oh, not because I want to keep it from you, but because the judges haven't told me either!" Wade said. "I think we'll only find out right before the competition."
Actually, he suspected that none of them were really listening to what he was saying anyway—before long, someone had stuffed more food into Wade's hands.
"Have some cake, Wade, or would you like a meat pie?"
"Thanks, I'm not hungry."
Amid the chaotic noise, Wade was surrounded by the crowd the entire time. He handled it with ease, while empty bottles quickly piled up on the tables and floor.
"You should come to our parties more often!" someone shouted. "Wade, you were born for this!"
Wade only smiled without replying.
Laughter and chatter echoed against the arched ceiling, foam from butterbeer spraying in every direction. Someone was even using magic to make the empty bottles clink together gently in front of the fireplace, producing a tune that was surprisingly pleasant.
Before long, a few students began dancing in the open space at the center—skirts twirling, steps light, laughter spilling out in bursts.
Michael, however, didn't join in. He gazed at Wade in the middle of the crowd with a hint of puzzlement, then silently observed the surroundings.
He saw Luna, wearing a fox-shaped hair clip and a pair of heavy spectacles, walk toward an armchair in the corner. But suddenly, as if she had bumped into something, she changed direction and sat down in the chair next to it instead.
Michael raised an eyebrow and headed toward that corner. Before he got close, he heard Luna say:
"Why aren't you joining in? Afraid someone might put foxmite eggs in your drink? My dad says those actually help with digestion."
"I'm not worried about that," came Wade's voice from near the empty armchair. "And my digestion is just fine."
Michael let out a small sigh of relief, walked over, and said, "I knew something was off—so who's that guy drinking over there in your place?"
"My Magic Doll," Wade replied lazily, invisible under a Disillusionment Charm. "Convincing enough to pass for me?"
"It is," Michael said, glancing back in that direction. "I almost didn't recognize the difference… Luna, how did you figure it out?"
"Oh, I just noticed there were some pestering gnats over here," Luna said casually. "The center of the party, invisible yet obvious—don't you think that's more interesting than the noisy crowd?"
Michael knew every girl in Ravenclaw, including Luna, who was famous for being "Loony." He also knew that when her words didn't make sense, the simplest solution was to ignore them.
If you asked for clarification, your thoughts would just be dragged off into some absurd alternate dimension.
He picked up a hazelnut from the table, tossed it into his mouth, and said: "If you don't want to deal with people, why not just head back to the dorm?"
"Well," Wade propped up his chin and said, "I want to be alone, but I also enjoy the happy atmosphere of the party. So why not be a quiet background piece, and just soak in this kind of pleasant energy?"
Michael's mouth curved in a knowing smile. "Alright then, this is your observation throne. As for me—I'm going to dance!"
He set down his drink, walked over to a black-haired girl standing alone by the bookshelves with her arms folded, bowed, and before long was spinning her into the dance floor.
Luna gazed at Wade thoughtfully. "I've heard of a kind of Quiet Dew—drink it, and even in the middle of a busy city, it feels like you're in the middle of a forest. I think you need that."
"Better not," Wade said with a laugh. "When I want to feel like I'm in a forest, I'll just go to the Forbidden Forest directly."
He hesitated, then asked, "Lately… have your things still been going missing?"
"Ah…" Luna blinked slowly, then said, "No one's been hiding my books and clothes anymore. My shoes always stay on the floor—they don't run off anywhere."
"I think I still heard someone calling you by that nickname?"
"Loony?" Luna shook her head carelessly, and a sprinkle of silver dust fell from her foxmite hair clip. "They think I'm strange, but that's alright. I just feel sorry for them."
She looked out at the crowd and shrugged. "It's not their fault they can't see a more wonderful world."
Wade smiled.
Sometimes, he also wondered—was the world Luna saw the same as the one he saw?
But that was a question destined to have no answer—even Polyjuice Potion couldn't give him the exact same thoughts as someone else.
