Chapter 55: Signs of a Breakup
Chapter 55: Signs of a Breakup
The fuse of the explosive crossbow bolt was lit simultaneously, and Simon slid down the monster's smooth neck...
Orange-red flames exploded from the back of the hungry angel's neck, burning the lifeless flesh into charcoal, and shattered bones and pieces of flesh were thrown into the air by the shockwave.
Its spine would not regenerate, and the explosion at the back of its neck caused its body to lean forward, its jaw slamming heavily against the steel plate before its entire upper body slid into the crater.
The blood pool was smashed, splashing up a dark red spray. Fragments of bone and viscera surged up the edge of the pit, overflowing the still-burning shrapnel.
The dust has settled.
【Iron Law - Contract: Slay the Hungry Angel (1/1)】
The warrior of the empire has found peace; no one will ever again use his body to commit blasphemy.
The Iron Emperor has witnessed your bravery and decisiveness; please accept his blessing.
[Blessing 1: Painful Counterattack. Pain is an adrenaline stimulant. When injured, you will gain tremendous speed and power, and your counterattacks will become even more lethal.]
[Blessing Two: Violent Therapy. Violence is a good medicine for ailments; you can set your own bones and reposition a dislocated arm.]
Simon could fix the dislocated bone himself; this blessing wouldn't be of much use.
[Blessing Three: Survival of the fittest. Warriors need to eat. When you consume any food, you will obtain nutrients, greatly reducing the damage caused by toxins.]
Simon hesitated between Blessing I and Blessing III, choosing not to choose Blessing II.
In the end, he chose the Blessed Three.
The second level of the abyss is called the Beast Hunting Garden, where all sorts of flowers are said to grow, many of which are poisonous.
He still remembered the sinner who had eaten canned food but unfortunately ate a purple sunflower. His tragic fate reminded Simon of the importance of resisting poison, especially on the second level, when dealing with the cave raiders.
He chose the third blessing, and the golden characters slowly melted and merged into his body.
Keep moving forward! The empire lies beneath your feet.
Proceed to the next level, awaken the fear within the aliens and blasphemers, and proclaim the glory of the Empire!

Back on the ground, all that remained in the ruins was the acrid smell of burning and a strong, foul stench, like that of a slaughterhouse sewer.
Several nuns removed their helmets and armor, which had been scalded and deformed, revealing long, silvery-white hair and pale faces.
Their faces were covered in sweat and grime. The youngest one looked to be under thirty, with a shrapnel wound near her eye that was still bleeding.
She sat on the ground, leaning against her shield, drinking large gulps of water from her jug, and then handed some to the person next to her.
The reanimated healers gathered on the east side of the ruins, where residual steam was still emanating from the ventilation holes of their armor.
Two doctors squatted on the ground, using a pair of iron tongs to pick up the shredded meat samples that had been blown apart and put them into an ecological box, while another doctor stood behind them, recording the data.
Simon stood up from the edge of the pit.
Andrei ran over from the other side of the ruins, the hem of his monk's robe stained with blood and mud, his face beaming with a genuine, uncontrollable smile.
"By the Emperor, Simon!" He drew out Simon's name, patted him on the shoulder, "You did it! You really did it! My friend, you killed the Hungry Angel!"
"It's all thanks to everyone." Simon was always humble. He pulled the heavy revolver from his waist and handed it back to Andrei.
"No need, consider this gun a gift!"
Andrei waved his hand, and Simon, who was short of weapons, accepted the Iron Fist pistol.
[Blood and Flesh Gospel - Commission: Scam a Legion-level Equipment (1/1)]
Although he waited a long time, Simon eventually completed the commission, even though he was unwilling to do so.
The Empire's guns and cannons...hmm, quite interesting.
The Mother of Abundance praises your wisdom and has decided to give you a small reward.
[Blessing 1: Climbing Hooks - Stiff, barbed hairs will grow on your palms, allowing you to climb slopes.]
This reminded Simon of a fictional character.
[Blessing Two: Be a friend to animals. Minimize your body odor to reduce the attention of abyssal creatures.]
[Blessing Three: Mantis Hunter, your arm can transform into a mantis arm in a short time]
He chose Blessing Two.
He would never choose a blessing that would greatly alter his body unless it was absolutely necessary.
【My dear, go before the Mother of Abundance, and you will receive even greater rewards】
[The Gospel of Flesh and Blood - New Commission: Journey to the Second Layer of the Abyss (0/1)]
"I have to go help. The reanimated healers will be boarding the monster's body later to collect the flesh as evidence. Even if it got blown up, there should still be a lot of valuable samples left." Andrei turned around and took two steps, then turned back and shouted to Simon, "Don't die, my friend! If you ever need anything, just come to me for help."
It seems that Anderson truly considers him a friend.
Simon watched his figure disappear behind the metal skeleton of the ruins.
He dared not linger there, turned around, and immediately ran towards the camp.
As soon as he returned to the camp, he attracted everyone's attention...
Klein was the first to stand up. He didn't say anything, just looked at Simon. Professor Loris raised his head, his cloudy eyes narrowing into slits in the morning light.
The criminals also gathered around the tent.
Everyone was looking at Simon.
The same question was written in everyone's eyes.
Simon didn't reach into his pocket or take anything out; he simply walked up to Elphis.
Elphis sat on a fallen, dead tree, his iron mask facing Simon, the lower half of his face showing no expression.
"Shall we talk in private?" Simon asked.
Elphis stood up and followed Simon behind a thicket of bushes outside the camp.
Two people stood behind the bushes, the mist billowing around their ankles.
Simon unzipped his backpack and took out the tightly wrapped piece of meat.
He peeled back the cloth, revealing a piece of flesh still pulsating, a dark red, incriminating piece of flesh. The surface of the flesh was covered with blood vessels, and blood flowed within them like tiny snakes. Several broken, grayish-white mycelia, already dried, hung from the flesh like an old man's beard.
Elphis stared at the piece of meat for a long time.
"That's right, there's no mistake, this is the flesh of evidence of sin."
"Please do as we agreed before." Simon rewrapped the meat and stuffed it back into his backpack. "Take us down to the second level. I'll give you the meat when I leave the abyss."
Elphis nodded: "Yes, I will take you to the second level. Once the abyss stabilizes, I will find an opportunity to send you out."
Simon looked at him, his eyes cold: "It's not about finding an opportunity, it's about absolutely doing it."
But Elphis remained silent.
"Now that things have come to this, there are some things you should know." His voice was very low, so low that only Simon could hear it. "Actually..."
A gunshot rang out.
Elphis's body suddenly stiffened.
On his back, directly opposite his heart, a small hole appeared in his gray coat.
Blood seeped from the hole, dark red, soaking through the fabric and spreading outwards like a slowly blooming flower.
