Chapter 27 Little Stone Pool
Chapter 27 Little Stone Pool
Wuliping is about 50 li (approximately 25 kilometers) from Zaohua Town, nestled in a small basin. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides, and a clear river meanders past the village.
Calling it a mountain village is a bit of a misnomer, as Wulipo is situated at the bottom of a basin, with flat paddy fields stretching for about three or four miles around the village. Beyond the paddy fields are low hills, and beyond those hills are the mountains. The mountains are at least ten miles away from the village. However, compared to people in the capital, it is indeed a mountainous area. With less land and farmland, life in the mountains is slightly harder than for farmers in the plains.
However, Wuliping still has some advantages in this area. This advantage is that the primary school built by Zisu's father is the only decent school in this area.
When Zisu arrived at Wuliping, her first stop was to visit the old clan chief, who was also her grandfather's sixth brother. The old clan chief was about sixty-five or sixty-six years old, and he looked quite healthy. He was a cheerful and kind old man.
Upon seeing Zisu, the old clan chief was extremely excited: "You're my eldest brother's granddaughter? Good child, why are you back alone? Where's your mother?"
Zisu: "Sixth Grandfather, my mother is pregnant, so I've temporarily settled her in the county town. I'm coming back to the village first because I plan to buy land and build a house. I'd appreciate it if Sixth Grandfather could give me his opinion!"
The old clan chief asked, "Would you like it quieter or more lively?"
Zisu: "Of course, it should be quiet. Mom has a baby in her belly, so it's not good for it to be too noisy. Also, it would be best if the surrounding environment was nice, with mountains and water and beautiful scenery!"
Upon hearing this, the old clan chief smiled and said, "Now that you mention it, I'm reminded of a place that you might really like."
Zisu: "Really? Could you please send a child to take me to see it?"
“Sure, why not? Let Xiaoshan and Xiaojiang take you to see them!” The old clan chief was amused by her words. It was quite amusing that a girl of about ten years old would speak of “children” in such an old-fashioned manner.
Xiaoshan and Xiaojiang are both grandsons of the old clan chief. Xiaoshan is twelve or thirteen years old, while Xiaojiang is slightly older than Zisu, around eleven years old.
Zisu: "Okay, thank you, Grandpa!"
The old clan chief called out to the door, "Xiaoshan, Xiaojiang, take Sister Zisu to the Little Stone Pool for a look!"
"Here we are, Grandpa!" As soon as the words were spoken, two chubby-faced boys rushed in and stood obediently in front of the old clan leader, looking intently at Zisu.
The old clan chief introduced them, saying, "Zisu, this is Xiaoshan, and this is Xiaojiang. They are both older than you, so you have to call them 'brother'." He then said to his grandson, "This is your great-grandfather's granddaughter, Zisu. She is your younger sister. You must take good care of her in the future and not bully her, understand?"
The three greeted each other politely, and Xiao Jiang and Xiao Shan led the way, with Zi Su and Xiang Li following closely behind.
When they reached the west end of the village and walked about a mile away, they heard the faint sound of water and stopped.
Xiaoshan smiled and said, "Sister Zisu, this is it! The scenery is indeed beautiful, but it's a pity that it's close to the back mountain and a bit far from the village."
Looking around, Zisu saw lush grass and scattered flowers, with verdant hills in the distance. Although not high, the trees were abundant, clearly indicating that these hills had been well-preserved for many years.
Xiao Jiang pointed to the mountains and explained, "These are the mountains near the village. They are not allowed to be cut down. The elders say that cutting them down will ruin the feng shui of the village."
"Brother Xiaoshan, I can hear the faint sound of water. Is there a pool or stream by the mountain?" Zisu had a vague idea in her mind and couldn't help but feel extremely excited.
Xiaoshan: "Yes, there is indeed a stone pool there."
"Let's go take a look!" Zisu took the lead and walked forward.
Xiaoshan and Xiaojiang quickly followed.
After walking about fifty steps, Zisu heard the sound of rushing water hitting the rocks, though it wasn't very loud. Could there be a waterfall there?
With that thought in mind, she quickened her pace considerably.
Sure enough, after walking a dozen or so steps further, a waterfall cascaded down, beneath which lay a small, about an acre-sized stone pool. Around the pool grew several peach trees. It was the season for peach blossoms to bloom, and a gust of wind sent pink petals fluttering into the pool. The water was crystal clear, and fish swam freely within.
What a beautiful, poetic scene!
Zisu fell in love with it at first sight: "This place is wonderful. I want to buy this mountain ridge, and the wasteland in front of it!"
