Chapter 17 The Voodoo Cult
Chapter 17 The Voodoo Cult
Lancheng, summer.
At midnight, the downtown area was firmly nailed to the bottom of the city by the sweltering heat of midsummer.
A heavy, lead-gray pollution cloud pressed down on the buildings, turning the neon lights of Upper Town into a hazy orange-red blob, and staining the entire sky with a sickly dim light.
Jiang Feng, dressed in black, strolled through the waterways. The stench of foul odor emanating from the waterways, mixed with the pungent smell of tar, assaulted his face, like a layer of oil that could never be washed off.
Following the route given by Chu Gonghua, he walked through one narrow alley after another, and just when he was about to get dizzy, he finally found his destination.
Directly in front of him, on an ugly wooden board, were written a few rather delicate characters.
"Free clean water resources will be distributed."
A wooden door, just wide enough for one person to pass through, stood directly below it. Looking inside, there was an old-fashioned movie theater that resembled one of the deepest memories Jiang Feng had of it.
"Block, block, block!"
The midnight bells rang in the upper district at that moment, and soon Jiang Feng, who was hiding in the shadows, saw groups of two or three people come out from different alley entrances and walk straight into the wooden door.
After waiting for a moment, just as the wooden door was about to close, Jiang Feng walked out of the alley with a numb expression and followed the last group of people inside.
"Squeak."
The moment he entered the movie theater, the heavy wooden door closed, and at the same moment, dim, yellowish-gray old-fashioned light bulbs lit up above their heads.
He noticed that most of the people who came here were emaciated homeless people, as well as some workers wearing tattered work clothes. He even saw a few high school students of similar age to himself, wearing other high school uniforms.
These people from different backgrounds all have one thing in common: their eyes are devoid of light, so empty that it's unsettling.
Jiang Feng huddled at the back of the crowd, subtly scanning the entire scene out of the corner of his eye.
The huge movie theater had been mostly emptied, and the floor where the chairs and benches used to be was covered with strange, dark red runes that he couldn't understand.
A group of people, presumably followers of the Voodoo sect, jumped and twisted around the rune, as if performing a grotesque ritual that could not be expressed in any words.
For no apparent reason, Jiang Feng thought of the strange and unintelligible paintings he had seen in certain places in his previous life. He felt that perhaps only a painter like that could resonate with these madmen here.
A circle of eerie green braziers was arranged along the wall, the flickering flames distorting everyone's shadows.
The believers muttered and roared at times. Suddenly, a faint pink flame rose from the center of the rune. A believer placed a small, incongruous statue inside. In the dim light, Jiang Feng felt that the statue seemed to have come to life.
About half an hour later, the believers completed the ceremony and left.
Those who had come with Jiang Feng then gathered together.
Two priests wearing bone masks were standing on the high platform of the movie theater. Nearly a hundred people were crowded below, making a lot of noise, mostly discussing when the clean water and food would be distributed.
Just then, the dull thud of the scepter striking the ground rang out, and the entire hall fell silent instantly.
The leading priest finally spoke, his hoarse voice coming through the mask. Although Jiang Feng could not sense any pollution fluctuations, he inexplicably felt that his words carried a strong seductive power.
The priest began by recounting the suffering of the lower classes, condemning the monopolies of the powerful, the injustice of the law, and the malice towards ordinary people.
Just in case, Jiang Feng activated his [Blessing].
This Body Tempering Technique also has mild resistance to mental pollution.
On the high platform, the priest continued speaking, promising people that those who joined the church would receive free clean water and food every day, learn techniques to resist radiation pollution, and, through the power of God, escape their fate of being trampled on by others.
The crowd below the stage gradually became emotionally charged. Some roared with red eyes, some knelt on the ground and wept bitterly, and some even began to recite the difficult prayers along with the priest.
Jiang Feng remained standing in the shadows, doing nothing.
On the high platform, another priest's gaze swept over everyone, lingering briefly on Jiang Feng and a few other martial artists, but nothing else.
Four hours later.
Jiang Feng 'successfully' obtained the clean water resources distributed by the Voodoo Sect and left the movie theater with a group of people like him who were still hesitant to join.
Those who decided to convert to the church tonight stayed behind to attend Mass.
........
Only after completely leaving the territory of the Voodoo Cult did Jiang Feng slowly breathe a sigh of relief, and somewhat hot, he took off his already soaked outer clothes.
A faint voice came from behind him.
"Are you alright?"
Jiang Feng's hair stood on end instantly, and he almost instinctively wanted to circulate his qi and blood. But when he turned around and saw who it was, his heart finally settled down.
He was a man about 1.7 meters tall with a slightly bloated, chubby face. Just by looking at him, no one would associate him with the word "law enforcement officer".
Qin De, a martial artist at the Sitting Illumination Realm, is the law enforcement officer specifically responsible for protecting Jiang Feng this time. He and Liu Sujun are from the same school. He had already met Jiang Feng when he was assigned the mission, and he has been secretly protecting Jiang Feng this time.
"Officer Qin," Jiang Feng said respectfully.
"Hmm." Qin De smiled. "Next, I'm going to conduct a psychological examination on you. Don't resist."
"Okay." Jiang Feng was absolutely certain that the Hextech system would not be detected by him, so he followed the instructions and allowed the other party's gentle mental power to slowly sweep over his mind.
Two minutes later, Qin De withdrew his power.
"no problem."
"Okay, thank you, Officer Qin." Jiang Feng let out a weak sigh of relief, all his strength drained away at that moment.
The atmosphere in the movie theater just now was too eerie. He was afraid that he would be silently infected before Qin De could make a move.
Ultimately, Liu Sujun's explanation was vague. She had only said that the mission involved collecting simple intelligence, but she never mentioned that she would have to face two priests who could mentally corrupt her at any time.
This was not the task he had promised at all.
Oh no, no way.
Once the thought formed in his mind, he could no longer suppress it.
After thinking for a moment, he suppressed his hesitation and asked the question aloud.
Qin De was taken aback upon hearing this, thinking to himself, "How did you get chosen by my junior sister? You're so... cautious?"
"Don't worry, every second you're inside, my mental energy is locked onto you and won't let go," Qin De patted his shoulder reassuringly.
"Those two priests may seem unfathomable to you, but their actual cultivation level is still a hair's breadth away from the Sitting Illumination Realm. I am a martial artist at the Sitting Illumination Realm. If anything happens, I can sense it before they even have a thought, and I will never let any contamination touch you."
Hearing this, Jiang Feng's worries did not disappear. Although Qin De said that, if it was really too late, he would not want to gamble even if there was only a one in ten thousand chance.
I have my own Hextech system that can grow infinitely, so I don't want to risk my life with you guys.
He pursed his lips. "But I'm still worried. Maybe I should..."
He didn't finish his sentence, but his meaning was already very clear.
Anyway, he hasn't received his pay for this month yet; he only got two free monster-hunting sessions, so it doesn't really affect his credit.
Oh well.
Seeing his stubbornness, Qin De sighed helplessly.
He figured it out: this kid was young, but he had no drive at all and was very cowardly!
But if they really drive people away, where will they find such a suitable candidate in the vast sea of people?
But then again... it's no wonder this kid is cautious.
It seems that the Voodoo sect's screening process has become more rigorous recently?
"How about this?" He weighed the options for a moment, then relented. "Consider it a reward for completing your mission. I'll give you a cultivation technique that can resist mental pollution. What do you think?"
