Chapter 2 Just Getting By
Chapter 2 Just Getting By
In the days that followed, Qin Wuyou began to recuperate, drinking bitter medicinal soup every day until he was almost vomiting.
In his previous life (referred to as Qin Wuyou's life in the 21st century), Qin Wuyou was in college. Due to his introverted personality, he couldn't quickly integrate into his dormitory and class, which led to him eating and attending classes alone every day. Gradually, Qin Wuyou became even more introverted and increasingly seemed out of place with others.
In truth, Qin Wuyou was already used to all of this. She had always been alone, playing alone, coming home alone. Her parents worked in a factory, often working overtime, returning home long after Qin Wuyou had fallen asleep, and waking up only to find they had already gone to work. Qin Wuyou had never learned to make friends, and her personality had become increasingly introverted. Qin Wuyou had tried to make some friends, but when everyone was together, she could never fit in. Her attempts to force herself in only resulted in her becoming free labor. Gradually, Qin Wuyou stopped getting close to anyone.
Watching everyone else chatting in small groups or large groups about skincare, handsome guys, and food and entertainment, Qin Wuyou had her own little hobby. When she was bored, she would go to the coffee shop in the school library, grab a book, find a corner, order an Americano, and read while drinking it. The first time she drank an Americano, Qin Wuyou almost died from the bitterness, but after a few times, she gradually began to like the bitter taste.
No one disturbed Qin Wuyou during her recovery period. After all, Qin Wuyou was just a nobody in the palace, and no one cared about her condition.
When Qin Wuyou had nothing to do, he would chat with the palace servants, intentionally or unintentionally probing for information. From these various probes, Qin Wuyou roughly understood that the current time was 227 BC, and Qin Shi Huang had unified the states of Han and Zhao. According to history, Qin Shi Huang would next wage war against the states of Wei and Yan.
"Something big happened in 227 BC, I think?" Qin Wuyou muttered to himself.
Unfortunately, Qin Wuyou had long forgotten most of the history and could only recall based on his vague understanding: "What were the stumbling blocks for Qin Shi Huang in unifying the six kingdoms?" The first thing that came to Qin Wuyou's mind was Jing Ke's assassination attempt on Qin Shi Huang. "Yes, the major event that happened in 227 BC was Jing Ke's assassination attempt on Qin Shi Huang! How could you forget something so important, Qin Wuyou? Your memory is really..." Qin Wuyou slapped his forehead, got off the recliner, and was about to leave.
But then Qin Wuyou stopped. She was only an 8-year-old child. First of all, no one would believe her, and she had no way of seeing Qin Shi Huang at the moment. "Oh my god, Qin Wuyou, you're really out of your mind. The most important thing now is to get better. The First Emperor is perfectly fine. It's like the emperor isn't worried, but the eunuch is." Qin Wuyou convinced herself in her heart.
"Let's not think about these things for now!" Qin Wuyou told herself. A little while later, a maid brought in the food. Qin Wuyou looked at the boiled meat and two green vegetable leaves in front of her, and a bowl of millet soup. Qin Wuyou really had no appetite. She had been here for three or four days, and she had been eating this watery soup every day. Qin Wuyou felt that she was seriously malnourished.
The food in the Qin Dynasty was similar to the stew in Northeast China today, but the stew in Northeast China has plenty of seasonings and oil at the bottom of the pot. The food in the Qin Dynasty was just boiled in water and only had a slight salty taste. Qin Wuyou felt that the salt was very bitter, and the saltiness was bitter, making it really hard to swallow. Qin Wuyou had no choice but to accept it.
After a simple lunch, Qin Wuyou looked at her shiny hair and called her maid to fetch water to wash it. People in ancient times really didn't wash their hair often. Washing it once every ten days or half a month was considered very diligent. There was no other way. People in ancient times had long hair, and without hair dryers, washing their hair was a lot of work and it dried very slowly. So, in order to nourish their hair, people in ancient times washed it less often and applied a balm every day. The balm was said to be made from pig fat, and it would make the hair shiny. But Qin Wuyou felt uncomfortable with it, so she only washed her hair every three days.
After washing her hair, Qin Wuyou sat in front of the bronze mirror, while a maidservant stood beside her, combing her hair gently. Looking at herself in the mirror, Qin Wuyou resembled Madam Wang, with fair skin, a round face, and large, bright black eyes, like a little fairy from a New Year's painting. Qin Wuyou was very satisfied with her appearance; it was better than her previous life. Her ordinary looks in her previous life had prevented her from having a single suitor during her four years of university.
Qin Wuyou watched as the people around her went out with their partners from time to time, and she was very envious. However, Qin Wuyou knew that she was not outstanding in appearance and was too introverted. She only had nodding acquaintances with her classmates and was not very close to her roommates, let alone other people.
That day, just as she was about to fall asleep, Qin Wuyou suddenly thought of a question: everyone else who transmigrates has a cheat code or a system, so why did she have nothing? Qin Wuyou called out in her mind over and over again, "System, system, system, system." Seeing that no one responded, Qin Wuyou tried other code words: "Open Sesame, babbling babbling!" No response. Qin Wuyou tried again: "You are my little apple, I can never love you enough~" Her mind was still silent. After waiting for a long time without hearing any sound, Qin Wuyou drifted off to sleep, but she didn't notice that a small cat-shaped object in her mind turned over.
The next morning, Qin Wuyou checked her body and found that she felt no discomfort. She planned to visit Madam Wang that day, since she had taken over the body of Madam Wang's daughter and should show her some filial piety.
Qin Wuyou never thought of going back after she learned that she had transmigrated. After all, her body was probably already dead, and in her previous life, she had always been a good girl, obediently going to school, growing up, and working at a company her parents knew, as arranged by them. Every day, she went to work and came home from work in a routine manner, seemingly perfectly normal. But Qin Wuyou knew that she was actually very depressed. For so many years, she had no friends, no lover, and no interest in anything. She always wanted to escape, to go to a strange place, to drop her good girl image, to eat meat and drink alcohol to her heart's content, and to go clubbing. Unfortunately, she had been a good girl for too long, and she couldn't let go of herself. She could only play the role of a good girl in the shell of a good girl.
Qin Wuyou felt that it was better that she died in her previous life. In fact, she had thought about suicide many times, but she couldn't let go of her parents. She knew that they would not be able to bear it if she committed suicide. Now it's better, maybe her parents can even get a good compensation. Qin Wuyou is dead, it's better that she's dead.
"From now on, your name is Ying Wuyou, and Ying Wuyou is you!" Qin Wuyou said, looking at the girl in the mirror.
