Chapter 24 The Secret of My Deskmate
Chapter 24 The Secret of My Deskmate
In the brand-new classrooms of the new school, sunlight streamed through the bright windows, spilling onto the desks as if draping everything in a golden veil.
Standing on the podium, a sly smile played on her lips, Ms. Zhang, the homeroom teacher, announced loudly, "Hello everyone, I'm your homeroom teacher, my surname is Zhang. I'm arranging for you to change desks. Li Shiqing and Liu Yixin, you two will be sitting at the same table from now on..."
Li Shiqing looked up and curiously glanced at Liu Yixin. Liu Yixin, in turn, was also looking at Li Shiqing with her big, watery eyes. The two little girls' gazes met, as if a strange current passed through them, vaguely foreshadowing the beginning of a special destiny.
On the third day of school, the classroom was still filled with that fresh yet slightly nervous atmosphere. The students were chattering and sharing their interesting stories from the holidays, while Liu Yixin, like a little storyteller, grabbed Li Shiqing's hand and began to tell stories non-stop.
"Shi Qing, do you know? A long, long time ago, there was a magical country where the houses were made of chocolate and the rivers flowed with sweet fruit juice." Liu Yixin spoke with great enthusiasm, her eyes sparkling.
Li Shiqing's eyes widened and her mouth slightly agape, completely captivated by this amazing story. She nodded repeatedly, saying, "Wow, does that mean we can eat houses whenever we want?"
"Haha, of course, but only good children can eat it. If a child is naughty, the house will turn into stone and trap them inside," Liu Yixin replied with a smile, while deliberately putting on a serious expression.
Li Shiqing stuck out her tongue and said, "Then I must be a good child."
The two little girls chatted away, one after the other, as if the whole world consisted only of their laughter.
Suddenly, as if remembering something, Li Shiqing tilted her head and asked, "Yixin, why have you never mentioned your mother?"
Liu Yixin's smile faltered slightly, a fleeting hint of sadness flashing in her eyes, but she quickly regained her composure. She nodded gently and said, "My dad said my mom is going to a very far place, a place I can't go to right now."
Li Shiqing nodded as if she understood, and unconsciously gripped Liu Yixin's hand, as if she were giving her strength.
Then, Liu Yixin asked in return, "Shi Qing, what about you? Why haven't you mentioned your father either?"
Li Shiqing sighed, looking like a little adult, and said, "My mother has never told me anything about my father. Ever since I can remember, my mother, grandparents, and uncle have always taken care of me at home. I don't even know what my father looks like."
Liu Yixin looked at Li Shiqing with eyes full of sympathy. She reached out her little hand and touched Li Shiqing's hair, saying, "It's okay. Even without a father, you still have us. I will always be with you."
A smile returned to Li Shiqing's face as she said, "Yes, we are good friends and will never be apart."
From then on, Li Shiqing and Liu Yixin became practically inseparable on campus. During breaks, they would hold hands and go to the playground to play together.
Liu Yixin pointed to a big tree by the playground and said, "Shi Qing, look at that tree. It must be a super giant, guarding our school every day."
Li Shiqing looked in the direction she was pointing and said with a smile, "What if it sneaks out and plays with us?"
"Maybe, after we're all asleep tonight, it might stretch and take a stroll on the playground," Liu Yixin said seriously.
During class, they would help each other. Once, Li Shiqing was stumped by a math problem and was so anxious that she stomped her feet. Liu Yixin saw this, gently nudged her arm, and whispered, "Don't worry, I'll teach you. This problem is like a small maze; we just need to find the exit." With that, she patiently explained it to Li Shiqing.
Li Shiqing, on the other hand, is quite the whiz in art class. When Liu Yixin was frowning at a painting, unsure how to color it, Li Shiqing patted her chest and said, "Yixin, watch me. I'll perform some magic for you and make this painting super beautiful."
As the days went by, their friendship grew stronger. One day, the school organized a field trip. Li Shiqing and Liu Yixin were so excited that they couldn't sleep all night and arrived at school early the next morning.
On the bus during their outing, they sat together, eating snacks and singing nursery rhymes. As Liu Yixin sang, she suddenly said, "Shi Qing, when I grow up, I'm going to take you to all the fun places in the world."
Li Shiqing held Liu Yixin's hand tightly and said, "Okay, let's go to the land of the chocolate house first."
Upon arriving at the picnic spot, they found themselves in a beautiful sea of flowers. The colorful blossoms swayed gently in the breeze, as if welcoming the children. Li Shiqing and Liu Yixin, like two cheerful little birds, ran around among the flowers.
Liu Yixin squatted down and looked closely at a small flower, saying, "Shi Qing, look at this flower, it seems to be smiling at us. It must be eavesdropping on our little secret."
Li Shiqing also joined in and said to Xiaohua, "Xiaohua, Xiaohua, you can't tell anyone our secret, or we won't talk to you anymore."
During the picnic at noon, Li Shiqing took out the delicious food her mother had carefully prepared from her backpack and shared it with Liu Yixin.
Liu Yixin ate a small cake and said contentedly, "Your mother's cake is so delicious, better than any cake I've ever eaten."
Li Shiqing smiled and said, "Then I'll ask my mom to make more for you in the future."
After their enjoyable outing, they returned to school and threw themselves back into their studies. But no matter how busy they were, they would always take a little time each day to chat about their dreams and worries.
Once, Liu Yixin was feeling down because she didn't do well on a test. Li Shiqing comforted her, saying, "Yixin, one test doesn't mean anything. You're like a little sun; sometimes the clouds cover you, but when they disperse, you'll still shine brightly."
Upon hearing this, Liu Yixin hugged Li Shiqing with emotion and said, "Shiqing, you are truly my best friend."
And so, in this new school, two little girls, Li Shiqing and Liu Yixin, gradually entered each other's inner worlds by chance, starting with sharing stories. They accompanied and encouraged each other, spending one wonderful day after another together. Their friendship, like the ancient tree in the schoolyard, took deep root and grew strong.
