Chapter 442: Unexpected Quarrel
Chapter 442: Unexpected Quarrel
He picked up the fish soup carefully, afraid to spill a drop, and then gently placed it in front of little Chang'an, his eyes full of love and care.
"Changan, come and drink the fish soup. Grandpa specially added vinegar for you. It tastes delicious!"
He Daqing's voice was gentle and encouraging. His words were like a spring breeze, instantly blowing away the mixed expression of loss and expectation on little Chang'an's face.
When little Chang'an heard that it was the fish soup prepared by his grandfather and that vinegar was specially added, his eyes immediately lit up as if he had discovered some treasure.
He excitedly stretched out his hand and held the edge of the bowl tightly, fearing that the delicious fish soup would suddenly disappear. Then, he picked up the spoon and couldn't wait to scoop a spoonful into his mouth. His satisfied expression seemed to say, "This fish soup is so delicious!"
While drinking the fish soup, little Chang'an did not forget to flatter He Yuzhu and He Daqing: "Dad's cooking is the most delicious! Grandpa loves Chang'an the most! You are all Chang'an's favorite people!"
His words were pure and innocent, full of gratitude and love for his family, making everyone present, except Yu Haitang, feel the strong family affection and warmth.
Yu Haitang was very angry when she saw Chang'an flattering He Yuzhu and He Daqing but not saying a word to her. He Yuzhu did not correct Chang'an either.
After taking several deep breaths, Yu Haitang suppressed the anger in her heart, and then said to Chang'an: "Why is it that in this family, only Grandpa and Dad are good, but I am not good!"
Hearing Yu Haitang's somewhat sarcastic tone, He Yuzhu frowned slightly, but when his eyes swept over her belly which had not yet bulged, He Yuzhu still didn't say anything.
He Daqing looked at his grandson who was afraid to continue drinking the fish soup because of Yu Haitang's words, and said to Chang'an soothingly: "It's okay, Chang'an, Mom is jealous of you, you praised Dad but not Mom."
After hearing what his grandfather said, Chang An raised his head and looked at Yu Haitang, saying in a baby voice, "Hello, Mom too."
Yu Haitang's expression eased a little, and she smiled and said, "That's more like it. You should know that it's because of me that you can drink fish soup."
Seeing this, He Yuzhu quickly changed the subject, "Changan, after drinking the fish soup, grandpa will take you out to play, okay?"
"Great, great!" Changan clapped his hands happily.
Yu Haitang's originally smug expression immediately turned bad because He Daqing interrupted again, but she didn't dare to say anything more. She planned to whisper it to He Yuzhu before going to bed at night.
......
After dinner, the house gradually became quiet, with only the occasional chirping of insects outside the window accompanying the deep night.
There was a satisfied smile on Chang'an's little face. He was obviously tired from a day of playing and fell into a deep sleep. His little body curled up in the quilt, looking particularly well-behaved.
Yu Haitang seized the opportunity and gently leaned on He Yuzhu's shoulder, with a barely perceptible tremor in her voice:
"Brother Yuzhu, look at what Dad and Changan said today. It's as if I've become an outsider in the family. I feel really bad."
He Yuzhu stopped what he was doing, turned sideways, and gently held Yu Haitang's hand with one hand, his eyes full of tenderness and understanding:
"Haitang, you misunderstood. Dad is old, and sometimes he speaks directly, and may not consider your feelings.
Changan, he is still young, how can he understand the complex emotions between adults, he just simply expresses his own opinions. He relies on you and me equally, there is no right or wrong. "
Yu Haitang's eyes slightly reddened when she heard this. She looked up at He Yuzhu, with both grievance and unwillingness in her eyes:
"How could I not mind? I'm pregnant with our child, but they treat me like this, making me feel like an outsider.
If they really don’t want me to have this baby, they should tell me earlier so I can be mentally prepared.”
He Yuzhu's face instantly turned serious when he saw this. He stood up, gently held Yu Haitang's shoulders with both hands, asked her to face him, and looked at her firmly and affectionately:
"Haitang, listen to me. What you said at the dinner table today was very unpleasant to me, let alone Dad. Changan is still young, and although he can't tell good words from bad ones, he can still feel the tone of the words.
You see, tonight, he was so scared that he couldn't even eat. This is not what we want to see. Besides, Dad didn't make things difficult for you, so why are you feeling wronged?"
At this point, He Yuzhu's tone softened a lot. He gently stroked Yu Haitang's back, as if he was comforting a frightened kitten:
"I know you feel bad now, but if you have anything to say in the future, we can sit down and talk it out. Don't let such misunderstandings hurt the relationship between us, okay?
Yu Haitang was originally leaning on the edge of the bed, with her hands folded in front of her abdomen, her eyes full of anticipation for the gentle comfort that He Yuzhu was about to give her.
She thought to herself that she could take this opportunity to get some extra care or a small gift for herself as a little surprise during her pregnancy. It would be even better if she could send Chang'an away.
However, just as she opened her mouth and before she could elaborate, He Yuzhu's words came like a sudden summer rainstorm, with a bit of harshness and confusion, instantly extinguishing the little flame in her heart.
"What's wrong with me? Was there anything wrong with what I said?" Yu Haitang's reaction was quick and intense. She sat up straight abruptly, like an angry cat, with all the nerves in her body tense.
Her eyes turned from gentle to sharp as she stared straight at He Yuzhu. A layer of mist quickly gathered in her eye sockets, but she stubbornly refused to let it fall.
"I worked so hard to carry your child, and endured physical discomfort and psychological pressure every day, but you - you, Dad, and Chang'an, joined hands to make me feel like an outsider in this family and bully me!"
At this point, Yu Haitang's voice trembled slightly, and every word seemed to be squeezed out from between her teeth, full of grievance and unwillingness.
She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself, but the rise and fall of her chest betrayed her inner feelings. She reached out and gently stroked her bulging belly, her eyes showing both maternal tenderness and dissatisfaction and helplessness with the current situation.
He Yuzhu looked at Yu Haitang like this, feeling mixed emotions. He knew very well that Yu Haitang had gone through a lot over the years, especially now that she was pregnant and her mood was easily volatile.
But he also understood that today's events could not just be left alone. He looked at Yu Haitang, keeping his eyes level with hers.
"Haitang, listen to me." He Yuzhu's voice became much softer. He stretched out his hand and wanted to stroke Yu Haitang's cheek, but was afraid of disturbing her emotions. In the end, he just gently placed his hand on hers.
"I know you've worked hard and you've given a lot to our family. But your words today were too intense. Chang'an is still young and he doesn't understand a lot of what you say, but he can feel the change in the atmosphere and your emotions will directly affect him.
We are adults and should learn to control our emotions and set a good example for our children."
"I'm being unreasonable?" Yu Haitang's voice suddenly became sharp, almost piercing through the silence of the room. Her body also trembled slightly, as if pushed by an invisible force, making it impossible for her to remain calm.
"You actually said that I was being unreasonable! He Yuzhu, ask yourself with your conscience, how much have I paid for this family and for you over the years? How dare you say this to me now!"
Her eyes were filled with tears, but she stubbornly refused to let them fall. She clenched her fists tightly, her nails digging deeply into her palms, as if only in this way could she ease the anger and grievance in her heart.
